iGin fertility clinic
iGin fertility clinic

iGin is a private clinic established in 2013. The clinic facilities benefit from bright, spacious and freshly designed reception and waiting areas, patient recovery rooms, consultation rooms, own laboratory and operating theatre. There are five single recovery rooms and one ensuite room. The clinic is located nearby the Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park that can be the perfect spot for a relaxing walk. The park leads directly to the city centre.

iGin offers a wide range of fertility treatments and diagnostics. The total number of treatments performed by the clinic in 2021 was 938 cycles of which 60% were IVF cycles with own eggs and 40% were egg donation cycles.

Patients can choose between face-to-face visits or online consultations. The first visit lasts approx. 1-2 hours. This may, of course, vary depending on the case. The first visit is completely free of charge. If your treatment involves partner’s sperm, your partner will be asked to leave a sperm sample for analysis and that, depending on the case, may be frozen to be used at a later date. If you choose to have a remote consultation, this can be done via Skype or telephone. Prior to the call, you will be asked to complete the medical history form and your case and treatment options will be discussed during the call.

The clinic’s international patients are constantly followed up by iGin’s fertility specialist. After the first visit, the patient is asked to have certain tests done. These can be done in their home country with their doctor. The results are emailed to iGin and the clinic’s doctor assesses them. Then another video call follows up to discuss the results and prepare the treatment for the patient. The prescriptions and treatment plan are sent out to the patient and the iGin doctor indicates when and how to perform the screenings during the hormonal stimulation. The patient does not need to visit the clinic at this point but can attend her regular gynaecologist/radiology centre to perform the scans and blood tests required. These are again emailed to iGin and assessed by the doctor who will indicate the following steps after every screening. Once the patient is ready and the exact date for egg pick-up or transfer in Spain is established, the patient is informed so they can book their flights and arrange their travel plans.

As such, the prognoses for each patient can vary greatly and usually are different from the presented average success rates of each clinic. If you want clarification about a clinic’s success rates, contact the clinic before scheduling an appointment – describe your medical history in detail, including your age, weight, height, the infertility diagnosis, the number of failed cycles, performed tests and procedures, etc. and ask for your individual success prognosis.

Institut Marquès spain-Fertility clinics in Spain
Institut Marquès spain

Founded in 1922, as a Gynaecology and Obstetrics clinic, the institute has been in operation for 100 years! The first IVF laboratory opened in 1989. Additionally, Institut Marquès has offices in Italy (a fully licensed clinic in Rome and a satellite centre in Milan). The main centre in Barcelona features an operating theatre, two IVF laboratories, an andrology lab, and 5 single recovery rooms, not ensuite; the centre in Rome (Villa Salaria) has one operating theatre, one IVF lab and one andrology lab. In 2021, the clinic performed around 3,000 treatment cycles.

Institut Marquès holds the following accreditations: ISO 9001.2015, UNE-179007.2013, UKNEQAS 2015/2016 (andrology lab), ASEBIR 2017 (embryology lab). It is also accredited by the Health Department of the Generalitat of Catalunya.

Medical Team at Institut Marquès

Institut Marquès works with 21 experienced doctors (excluding the Medical Director) and 13 embryologists (11 in Barcelona and 2 in Rome). What is important, they have 5 senior embryologists who have between 8 and 15 years of experience in the field. Two of the clinic’s embryologists are ESHRE accredited. Patients are supported by an international team made of 20 Patient Assistants and Medical Assistants. The staff speaks English fluently.

Dr Marisa López-Teijón

Dr. Marisa López-Teijón Pérez

The Director of Institut Marquès is Dr. Marisa López-Teijón Pérez. She is also a member of the Governing Board of Sterility and Infertility Section of the Spanish Society for Gynaecologists (SEISEGO) and other numerous medical associations. The scientific platform Research Gate ranks Dr. López-Teijón in the top 10% of the most influential infertility researchers worldwide. Her medical publications have had a huge effect on the discoveries in her field. Dr. López-Teijón has published 54 articles that have been cited 359 times with almost 4,733 readings. She is also a full member of the “Ilustre Academia de Ciencias de la Salud Ramón y Cajal” and received the “Cordón y Pin Académico” award. Embryo Monitoring – Fertility clinics in Spain

The specialists at Institut Marquès understand well that the initial stage of any fertility treatment can be a highly stressful moment for the patients. That is why they launched a service called Embryomobile that allows patients to watch the development of their embryos live on a smartphone or tablet. So far Embryomobile has been used by thousands of patients. According to the clinic’s survey presented at ESHRE, the experience for patients was extremely moving and helped them reduce anxiety. Now that patients can be directly involved and are able to see their embryos before the transfer, they have a feeling of being of control and it helps minimize the stress.

Music at Institut Marquès Fertility clinics in Spain

The clinic is a world pioneer in incorporating music in embryo culture. The studies conducted by the clinics have shown that micro vibrations from the music produce movements similar to those that fertilised eggs experience in the mother’s womb. The vibrations help stir the culture medium and that results in a more homogeneous distribution of nutrients in the fertilized egg. The use of music turned out to become a key factor in the increase of Institut Marquès’s success rates which are already among the highest on the globe.

Instituto Bernabeu – Alicante-Fertility clinics in Spain
Instituto Bernabeu – Alicante

The Instituto Bernabeu – Alicante was established in 1985 and is a private clinic. In 2020, they performed 2,333 treatment cycles and 1,907 frozen transfers making this one of the larger IVF clinics in Spain. 36% of the treatments were egg donation cycles and 64% were IVF cycles using own eggs. The Instituto Bernabeu group has eight clinics: seven clinics in Spain (Alicante, Madrid, Mallorca, Albacete, Elche, Cartagena, Benidorm) and another one in Venice (Italy). The Alicante IVF clinic has parking on-site with access for the disabled, Wi-Fi and an on-site pharmacy. There are three laboratories and two theatres and nine en-suite single recovery rooms.

At Instituto Bernabeu, there is also, the Poor Responders Independent Unit where you can be treated for early ovarian failure. There, you will be able to benefit from a range of diagnostic tools such as lab tests, 4D ovary and uterus scans, genetic marker tests, prognosis report, and Array-CGH. Read more about diagnosing and treating premature ovarian failure (POF) at Bernabeu here.

In order to ensure the correct state of health of the mother and the baby, Instituto Bernabeu maintains an age limit, following the recommendations of the main international scientific societies. Patients who are treated at this clinic cannot be older than 50 in case of IVF with own eggs. If the patient is 50 years old and until she turns 51, provided her good health has been confirmed, embryo adoption treatment can be performed in which embryos are not generated, but the patient adopts an existing one. This avoids the ethical dilemma of having created embryos in excess that will never be suitable for transfer.

Before any treatment, it is the responsibility of the highly specialised medical team to assess the correct state of health of the future mother in the face of pregnancy. For 45+ patients, there will be tests run to assess feasibility before deciding on your treatment: Fertility clinics in Spain
