Dr. Kamini A. Rao, the founder and Medical Director of Milann is a pioneer in the field of Assisted Reproduction in India. Across her distinguished Clinical and Research Career in Reproductive Medicine, Dr. Kamini Rao Specialized in Reproductive Endocrinology, Ovarian Physiology and Assisted Reproductive Technology.
Dr. Kamini A. Rao is a pioneer in the field of Assisted Reproduction in India. She has specialized in reproductive endocrinology, ovarian physiology and assisted reproductive technology and has been awarded the Padma Sri, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Among her early contributions to the field is the establishment of South India‘s first semen bank, India’s First Sift Baby and South India’s First Babies born through ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) as well as through laser-assisted hatching. Across a clinical and research career spanning three decades, Dr. Kamini Rao has taught and trained hundreds of Fertility Specialists and has served as a beacon of hope to thousands of infertile couples.
Dr. Kamini Rao received her training in Fertility and Assisted Reproduction in the United Kingdom and returned to India to set up the Bangalore assisted conception centre, now known as Milan, the Fertility Centre in 1989.
Dr. Kamini Rao is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Infertility and Fetal Medicine, is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology of the MOH & FW and the ICMR, as well as a member of the National Apex Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy Instituted by ICMR and DBT. Dr. Kamini Rao is also the chairperson of the International Institute for Training and Research in Reproductive Health.
Dr. Kamini Rao was awarded the Padma Shri award by the President of India in 2014. Other Recognitions of her contributions in the field of Medicine include – the Karnataka State Award (Rajyotsava Award), the Vidya Ratan Award, lifetime achievement honours Tribute Award from the Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence, Hyderabad, the Aryabhatta Award from the Aryabhatta Cultural Organization, the B.C. Roy District Award from the Shimoga District Unit of the Indian Medical Association and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the KSOGA and the Bangalore Society of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

A recipient of the Padma Shri, Dr. Kamini Rao is a pioneer of the assisted reproduction fraternity in India and an educationist of repute. She has set up the Kamini Kares Foundation, an organization that focuses on working towards improving, enhancing and enlightening the lives of the girl child and women in our country. She is currently in the process of setting up a laboratory facility for prenatal diagnosis of genetic diseases like Hemophilia, Downs Syndrome, Thalassemia & for carrier testing as well as the setting up of a research database to allow for more research leading to improved treatment and better quality of life.
A vision for developing the reproductive medicine talent in the country led to the setting up of a strong education vertical which is affiliated to BACC Healthcare and is considered to be amongst the country’s premier institutions for education and training in Reproductive Medicine both for clinicians and embryologists. Alumni from this institute form the backbone of many of the leading IVF centres of the country. Dr. Kamini Rao being academically oriented, has authored nearly 50 medical textbooks and a large number of journal and chapter publications.
Dr. Kamini Rao served as President of the All India Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies (FOGSI) in the year 2000 as well as the President of ISAR between 2006 and 2008. She has the distinction of simultaneously serving as the FOGSI representative to FIGO as well as AOFOG. She has been a nominated Member of the Senate of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences between 2009 to 2012 and a Member of the Syndicate between 2015 to 2018.
She has served as a Member of the Central Supervisory Board, Govt. of India (GOI) for implementation of the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act, Member, National Apex Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy and as Member of the drafting committee for formulating National Guidelines for “Accreditation, Supervision and Regulation of ART Clinics in India”
Dr. Kamini Rao is one of the stalwarts of the medical profession in India and her contributions to the medical field and in particular to Assisted Reproduction are immeasurable. She has done India proud not only with her achievements in her own specialty and academically but also as a champion for the cause of women be it Safe Abortion, Female Feticide or Women’s Sexual & Reproductive Rights with the aim of improving the quality of life and the status of women in society.
